EMDR

EMDR is a highly effective form of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) that uses advanced psychotherapy techniques by specially trained therapists. EMDR is one of the most researched psychotherapies in the field of mental health with some of the best outcomes for treating trauma and PTSD. EMDR has also been used successfully in treating generalized anxiety, social anxiety, phobias, and addiction and can help alleviate some of the negative self-talk and self-image issues associated with depression. EMDR can also help to heal relationship attachment issues as well as relationship trauma and stressors including abuse and neglect from caretakers and family. Sensitive issues including sexual abuse and trauma can also be helped from EMDR whether the traumatic event took place as a child, teenager, or an adult.

At Athena Psychological Services, psychologist, Janet Heuring Larsen uses high quality equipment in a very comfortable and relaxing setting. Clients outline the issues or events that they would like to work on and associated distress levels are measured before and after each treatment to monitor the effectiveness. Most clients start to see improvements in four to six sessions, though complex trauma including attachment issues may take several sessions longer. EMDR participants are offered the choice of bilateral stimulation treatment in the form of eye movements, auditory tones, and tactile pulsers which can be used individually or in combination based on the participant’s comfort and preference.

Janet Heuring Larsen is a Certified Trauma Professional (CTP) and has completed EMDRIA-approved EMDR training rendering her qualified to provide this specialized treatment. Janet Heuring Larsen has not only provided EMDR through the years to her clients, but has also experienced the unique healing powers of EMDR in her own personal life growing up with family who struggled with major depression.
